Intro
As of September 30, 2026, these are not the same kind of foldable.
- Apple iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable — a book-style phone (passport-sized when closed). Apple announced it September 9, 2026. Pre-orders start October 16; sales begin October 23, 2026. It is not shipping yet. Official US start: $1,999 (256GB). Specs below lean on Apple’s announcement plus reporting from The Verge and MacRumors.
- Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 is a shipping clamshell Flip (folds horizontally into a compact square). It launched July 2025 at $1,099 (256GB). Specs from Samsung / GSMArena. Samsung has since launched Galaxy Z Flip 8 (Aug 2026, ~$1,199); this piece uses Flip 7 as the widely stocked Flip reference with a clear street listing — same form factor decision either way.
This specrel comparison is about who should buy which form factor: a large inner tablet-like canvas (Duo) versus a pocket clamshell with a useful cover screen (Flip). It is not Duo vs Galaxy Z Fold.
Amazon links: Duo uses a search URL (no confirmed retail ASIN before ship). Flip 7 uses a real unlocked listing ASIN when available.

Form factor: book vs Flip
This is the decision that matters more than any single benchmark.
iPhone Duo (book-style) opens to a 7.6-inch inner panel — Apple’s largest iPhone display, about 50% larger than iPhone 18 Pro Max’s screen area per Apple. Same aspect ratio on the 5.4-inch cover means apps and media scale cleanly when you unfold. Closed, it is closer to a passport than a candy-bar phone. Apple’s pitch is Split View (two apps side by side on iPhone), tent/stand poses, Duo FaceTime / Smart Take camera tricks, and MagSafe continuity with the rest of Apple’s gear. Tradeoffs called out in early coverage: it is heavier (~254 g) and thicker when shut than recent Android book foldables, dual 48 MP cameras without a long telephoto, and a $1,999 entry that sits near Samsung’s Fold-class pricing — not Flip-class.
Galaxy Z Flip 7 (clamshell) folds into a compact square that disappears into a jeans pocket. The 4.1-inch FlexWindow is large enough for replies, maps glances, widgets, and selfie framing without opening the phone. Unfolded you get a tall 6.9-inch 21:9 slab that feels closer to a normal phone than a mini-tablet. At 188 g and $1,099, it is the approachable foldable: fashion-forward, one-handed closed, familiar Android. Tradeoffs: IP48 (weaker dust rating than Duo’s IP68), slower 25 W charging, Exynos 2500 instead of a Snapdragon flagship in many markets, and a cover UI that still trails a full phone experience.
If you want a pocketable slab that halves, buy a Flip. If you want a pocketable mini-tablet that opens, wait for Duo (or shop a Galaxy Z Fold / peer book foldable today).
Displays & software
Duo: Both OLEDs claim ProMotion, Always-On, and 3,000 nits peak. The inner panel’s nano-texture finish is Apple’s crease/glare bet; Apple Pencil (USB-C) support is promised later in 2026. iOS 27 moves dock/status controls for the tall open canvas and adds true Split View. Ecosystem lock-in (iMessage, Continuity, Apple Watch unlock) is the soft feature Flip cannot match.
Flip 7: Main and cover both hit ~2,600 nits and 120 Hz. One UI on the FlexWindow is better than early Flips but still a “lite” phone. DeX-style / multi-window Android tricks exist, yet the narrow 21:9 open panel is for scrolling and video, not Duo-style side-by-side productivity.
Performance, battery, cameras
On paper both are flagship-adjacent foldables with 12 GB RAM. A20 Pro plus a large vapor chamber is aimed at sustained open-screen gaming and on-device AI; treat Duo battery figures as Apple claims until independent reviews land after October 23. Flip 7’s 4,300 mAh is proven in the wild — typically a full day with moderate cover-screen use; 25 W charging is the weak link.
Cameras: Duo’s dual 48 MP stack matches Apple’s mid-Pro philosophy (no variable-aperture main, no long tele) but adds fold-only features (Duo Preview, Smart Take, Kid Cue). Flip 7’s 50 + 12 MP kit is competent for social and FlexCam angles; it is not an S25 Ultra shooter.
Who should buy which
| Buy iPhone Duo (from Oct 23) if… | Buy Galaxy Z Flip 7 (now) if… |
|---|---|
| You want a book-style canvas for Split View, media, and notes | You want a clamshell that halves into a tiny pocket brick |
| You already live in iOS / Apple Watch / Mac | You want Android, Samsung DeX-adjacent workflows, or carrier Flip deals |
| You can wait for Oct 16 preorder / Oct 23 launch and pay ~$2,000 | You want a foldable today near $1,100 (often less on promo) |
| IP68 + titanium durability matter | 188 g weight and cover-screen selfies matter more than IP68 |
| eSIM-only is fine | You still want a physical Nano-SIM option |
Verdict: Do not treat this as “Apple foldable vs Samsung foldable” in the abstract — pick the hinge direction first. Flip 7 wins for buyers who want a shipping, stylish, half-price clamshell. iPhone Duo wins for Apple-ecosystem buyers who specifically want a 7.6-inch book fold and can wait (and pay) for October. If you need a book foldable before Oct 23, look at current Galaxy Z Fold / peer Android book foldables instead of forcing the Flip into that role — and if you want Samsung’s newest clamshell hardware, compare Flip 8 street pricing against remaining Flip 7 deals.
FAQ
Is the iPhone Duo a Flip-style phone?
No. Duo is a book-style foldable (opens left/right like a small tablet). Galaxy Z Flip 7 is a clamshell (opens up/down). Apple’s own FAQ notes the outer display can appeal to Flip users for one-handed closed use, but the hardware category is book fold.
Can I buy iPhone Duo on Amazon today (Sep 30, 2026)?
Not as a shipping retail unit. Apple’s window is preorder October 16 and availability October 23. Our product card uses an Amazon search link with tag specrel-20 until real ASINs exist — confirm seller and ship dates before paying.
Is Galaxy Z Flip 8 a better buy than Flip 7?
Often only if you want the newest chip / thinner chassis and will pay ~$1,199. Flip 7 remains the value Flip for many shoppers. Form-factor advice above applies to both.
Will Duo replace a tablet?
For email, Split View docs, and video, the 7.6-inch inner panel covers a lot of “small iPad” jobs. It will not match a full iPad for long typing or Apple Pencil art until Pencil support ships and you try it in person — budget for that caveat.
Which is more durable?
On paper Duo’s IP68 beats Flip 7’s IP48, and Apple emphasizes titanium + Ceramic Shield. Foldables still hate grit in the hinge — a case and careful pocket discipline matter on both.
